Description
PITCH PINE, Pinus rigida – A medium-sized “hard pine” with stiff twisted needles and thick, platy bark. This fire-evolved tree has serotinous cones that require high heat to open, and it is able to re-sprout from burned stems or cut stumps. Prefers full sun and well-drained sandy soils. Tolerates drought and salt well. Found in the ecologically unique pine barrens around the Concord and Ossipee areas of New Hampshire and along the northeastern seaboard. Seeds are good for small mammals and songbirds. Also a popular choice for bonsai enthusiasts. Seedling height 4-6 inches. Mature tree height: 40-70 plus feet.
