Description
HYBRID BUTTERNUT, Juglans cinerea x Juglans ailantifolia – A prolific nut producing tree that grows best on rich, well drained sites in full sunlight. The parent trees of these hybrid seedlings were sourced from surviving butternut found across the New Hampshire landscape as part of a decades long project in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service. Initially believed to be pure North American butternut (Juglans cinerea), all the trees proved to share a complicated genetic heritage with Japanese walnut (Juglans ailantifolia) which makes them resistant to the lethal butternut canker disease. The rich, oblong nuts are a beneficial food source to many wildlife species including squirrel, deer and turkey. Seedling height: 12-24 inches. Mature tree height: 60-90 feet. Maximum of 10 seedlings per customer.
